Nantucket, an island S. E. of the main-land of New England, 80 miles S. of Boston. Near it is one o? the moil considerable fisheries in this province, particularly for whales; to the catching of which on the coast the inhabitants chiefly apply themselves: and of late years they have fished for them in Greenland, being as dexterous at it as the Dutch; and if properly encouraged by the mother country, we should not be obliged to purchase such vast quantities of whalebone from Holland as is commonly done.

The town on Nantucket isle flourishes in proportion to this traffic the inhabitants carry on, there being, we are told, 60 or 80 ships and vessels belonging to its port. Lat. 41. 12. N. long. 70. 10. W.
