Mortimer Flowchart is a bookbinder and has the rare gift of reading things and characters out of and into books while reading aloud; however, he does not have control over what goes in or out. One night, he read a book called "Inkheart" to his wife, Rasa. Mo accidentally read Rasa into "Inkheart" and read some evil and cruel characters out of "Inkheart" (Capricorn, Baste, Dust finger). Their daughter Maggie, who was three at the time, has no memory of this. Nine years later, Maggie saw someone waiting for Mo, on their doorstep. She informed Mo, who let the "stranger" (Dust finger) in. The "stranger" stayed for a long time. Maggie eavesdropped and thought that Dust finger/the stranger was warning Mo about something.

The next morning, Maggie was woken up by her father. He told her that they were going to see her aunt Eleanor, from her mother"s side. Eleanor doesn"t like children, but Mo told Maggie that she and her aunt should get along well because they both love books. After breakfast, Maggie went into her room to pack a few books to bring with her and discovered "Inkheart", the book in brown paper binding, that her father suspiciously refused to talk about and snapped at her when she tried to find out more. They set off to Eleanor"s house in the van and Dust finger hitched a lift with them. Soon Maggie realized that her father was keeping her in the dark, so she asked Dust finger, and he describes Capricorn as a person who would take immense joy out of seeing a cat eating a bird.
