The exhibition "A Garden Eden: Masterpieces of Botanical Illustration," which was first shown during the summer of 2001 in the Great I (all of the Austrian National Library, belongs among the most influential exhibitions of the last decades. A selection of about 100 particularly remarkable works was assembled from the library's holdings of botanical books and herbals; this collection was then curated and presented to the public. The selections ranged from the most famous and, over the centuries, most widely consulted remedy books, including the I 'ieiiua Dioscorides, which originated around the year 512 in the Byzantine Empire, to large format illustrations spanning five centuries and modern photographic editions of the present. These exhibits show, above everything, unusual precision and artfulness but they also show the beauty of these nature studies created long before the invention of photography.
